Essential Coffee Equipment for Beginners: A Complete Starter Kit

By the Cup Craft Review Editorial Team · Updated

Starting out, it’s easy to buy the wrong things first. This guide gives a priority order and three example kits.

The priority order

  1. Fresh whole-bean coffee — roasted recently, from a roaster that prints a roast date.
  2. A burr grinder — the biggest equipment upgrade. See burr vs blade.
  3. A brewer — AeroPress, pour-over, French press or drip machine.
  4. A scale — consistency.
  5. A kettle — a gooseneck for pour-over.

A simple starting recipe

A widely used starting point is around 55–60 g of coffee per liter of water (roughly 1:16–1:18). Brew, taste, then change one thing: grind finer if it’s sour or weak, coarser if it’s bitter or harsh.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum equipment for good coffee?

Fresh whole beans, a burr grinder, a brewer and a scale. Everything else is optional.

Should I start with espresso?

Only if you mainly drink espresso drinks. Filter coffee gear is cheaper and more forgiving to learn on.

What water should I use?

Clean, good-tasting water. If your tap water tastes off, filtered water usually improves coffee.

Specifications are taken from manufacturer listings and can change between production runs; confirm details on the retailer page before buying. Prices are not shown because they change frequently.
